Repper is an online pattern design tool that makes it easy to create repeating patterns. The way that Repper works is you select a source image and choose from different repeat options. Based on the selected repeat and source area it will create different patterns.
Does Repper have a free trial?
Yes, you can sign up for Repper’s free limited trial. This will give you 14-day free access. There are some limitations on how many source images you can upload and how many downloads you can do during this free trial. This will allow you the chance to try out this pattern maker tool before investing any cost.
Creating a Collection
To start off you will create a New Collection and give it a name. You can always change the name later. Collections provide a way to organize your designs.
Next, Choose an image. You can upload your own source image or click on image source to choose from the library of images. Repper is connected with Unsplash which is a free online collections of images that are available for free to use for commercial use.
Once you have chosen your image it will bring you to the screen where you can start creating your patterns.
Pattern Tab
In the pattern tab the first option you have is to select the tiling type. Click on the tiling name and you can choose from the list of available tile types. If you click on the 4 square icon it will visually show you what the pattern looks like in each of the different tile types. This is a helpful feature because you can visually see the different tiling options at once.
What you will notice that each tiling type may have different options. In some case you can rotate the tile and change additional options.
Below the tiling options you will see the image and a defined source area. This selected area is what determines your repeated pattern. By default fixed aspect ratio is selected, but you have the option to toggle this state of an you can easily change the size, width and height of the source area.
Underneath the image you will see the image size dimensions and the tile size dimensions based on your source area. The larger the source image and the larger the area selected the bigger your tile dimensions can be.
When you move around the source area on your image you will see your pattern adjust in the right viewer area.
The Pattern Viewer
On the right part of the screen in the pattern viewer. As you make adjustments to your source area you will see the pattern area change.
There are 3 available views:
- Tile – This view you can see the base tile of your pattern in the smallest repeat unit.
- Surface – This view shows you multiple repeats of your pattern. You can zoom in or out to make it larger or smaller.
- 3D – With the 3D view you can choose from a number of three dimensional objects to see your pattern on. What is cool about this feature is you can change the source area and it will automatically adjust in the 3D view as well.
In the pattern viewer there is also the dream mode feature. When you turn on dream mode the source area will continue to change and you will see the pattern change in the pattern viewer.
Saving your Pattern
When you decide that you like a pattern you can click on the plus icon on the left hand side to save a snap shot. As you continue to text out different tilings and source areas you can continue to click on the plus icon to save additional snapshots.
Note: The maximum amount of snapshots you can do in a collection is 100.
